27 Miles south of Sedona, and 2,000 feet above the Verde Valley clinging to the slopes of Cleopatra hill, Jerome has a history as colorful as the copper it once mined. The United Verde mining operations began in 1883, and Jerome blossomed into a cosmopolitan boom town filled with excitement and riches. Fires and landslides threatened to destroy much of Jerome, but the mines closing in 1953 brought the end of an era.

Today's Jerome - with its narrow streets, alleys and stairways, is a tourist destination and has a reputation as an artist's community, with old storefront's turned into galleries and shops; several "haunted" hotels and a variety of entertaining and unique restaurants. Jerome is also a destination for motorcycle riders from all over the state who make the climb up Mingus Mountain to line up with other bikers outside the Spirit Room and enjoy a cold brew and some live music. Jerome is less than 1 square mile in size, and is home to about 350 residents who are listed in their 4 page phone directory.
